- browser
- a program that allows people to navigate specific areas of the Internet. a browser allows you to find, load, and view webpages. (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox)
- cable modem
- high speed internet service that is run through your cable companys lines to your computer.
- dialup internet connection
- a network connection which rrequires that a telephone number be dialed
- digital subscriber lines (dsl)
- dsl is a high-speed internet line that runs throough regular phone lines. also referred to as an "always on" connection because you do nt have disconnect from it in order to use your phone.
- a system for spending and receving messages electronically over a computer network, as between personal computers.
- hacker
- someone who uses computers illegally to get info or harm others computers
- hypertext markup language (html)
- the programming language used to create web pages.
- hyperlink
- a highlighted or underlined word or graphic on a web page that leads to another web page. it links the webpages together.
- internet account

what allows the user to get online. typically includes a login, passwrod, and email adderss. set up through your isp.
- inter serivce provider(isp)
- an organizatio/business that provides access to the internet. some of the better-known ISPs include AOL, MSN, and Yahoo. they allow you to access their server that is connected with the other computer networksor the internet.
- modem
- a device that connects the computerto the internet via phone or cable lines
- network
- a group of connected computers in either a lan, or local area network, or a wan, wide area network.
- search engine
- a webite that searches the internet for specific info. by creating indexes, or large databases of web sites(based on titles, keywords, and the text in the pages), search engines can locaterelevant web siteswhen users enter search terms or phrase.
- server
- a computer that stores info that can be accessed by via the internet. when users connect to a server, they can access programs, files, and other info fromthe server. common servers are web server, mail servers, and lan servers.
- URL
- "unifrom resource locator." a url is the address of a specific web stit of file on the internet.
