- What are current U.S. Laws affecting People with disabilities?
- -the Rehabilitation Act 1973 -Education of All Handicapped Children Act of 1973 -Developmental Disabilities and Bill of Rights Act Amendment of 1987 -Technology-Related Assistance of Individuals for Disabilities Act of 1988 -American with Disabilities Act of 1990
- Assitive Technology Device
- any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired off the shelf, modified, or customized purpose: used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities
- Integration
- means equal right of individuals with developmental disabilities to use the same commuity resources that are used by and available to other citizens
- Developmental Disability
- people with mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and other disabling conditions
- Individual Education Program
- includes a statement of measureable annual goals -includes benchmarks or short-term objectives related to meeting the child's needs that result from the child's disability to enable the child to be involved in and progress in general curriculum -explanation of the extenet, if any, to which the child will not participate with nondisabled children in the regular class
- Handicapped Person
- any person who has: -physical/mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of such a person's major life activities -has a record of such impairments -regarded as having such an impairment
- Major Life Activities
- self-care, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, and walking

- Education of All Handicapped Children Act of 1975
- -guarantees that a free appropriate eudcation, including special education and related service programming, is available to children and youth with disabilities who require it -makes it possible for states and localities to receive federal funds to assist in the eudcation of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, children and youth with disabilities
- Developmental Disabilities and Bill of Rights Act Amendment of 1987
- -all services provided under this law must be aimed at providing opportunities and assistance for people with developmental disabilities to enable them to "achieve their maximum potential through increased independence, productivity, and integration into community."
- Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988
- sole purpose is to expand the availability of assistive technology services and devices to individuals with disabilities

- -has been referred to "20th century emancipation proclamation for individuals with disabilities" -it guarantees equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities in employment, public accommodation, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications -the most signficant, federal law assuring full civil rights of all individuals with disabilities
