what is the hydrogen bonding in water due to?
the slight positive charge on the hydrogen and slight negative charge on the oxygen.
what are the important properties of water? (9)?
solvent, cohesion, adhesion, surface tension, high melting and boiling point density heat of fusion heat of vaporization specific heat capacity.
what does the ph scale indicate?
how acidic or basic a substance is.
what happpens if ph drops or rises?
denature
what is denature
the enzyme will not function properly.
what is a buffer/
keeps ph level constent
what is an acid ph?
it frees H+ ions below 7
what is a base?
frees more oh- and is above 7.
what is nutralization?
whenan acid and base are put together and cancel them selves out.
what do carbohydrates do ?
provide energy
what three elements are carbohydrates made up of
carbon hydrogen and oxygen.
what are monosaccharides?provide examples?
simple sugars such as glucose, fructose and galactose
what is a monosaccharides formula?
c6h1206.
what are disaccharides ?
double sugars.
How do disaccharides form?
in dehydration synthesis. When one molecule of water is released.
what is the splitting of a dissaccharide called?
hydrolysis. One water molecule is consumed.
What is maltose made up of?
2 glucose
what is sucroce made up of?
glucose and fructose.
what is lactose made up of?
glucose and galactose.
what is a polysaccharide?
long chain compoused of glucose molecules
what is startch/
plant storage .
what is glycogen?
animal storage
how is glycogen produced?
produced by the pancrease whichstimulates the liver to absorb glucose and form glcogen when blood level is high.
what is cellulose?
its for plant walls. It doesnt branch and cant be digested.
what are lipids and another name for them?
they are called tryglicerides and are made from one glycerol and three fatty acids.
what are fatty acids ?
long chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms attached.
what is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids?
a saturated fatty acid has the maximum number of hydrogen chains. while unsaturated has one or more hydrogens missing.
