- What are biorhythms?
- rhythms that control/initiate biological processes linked to the rhythmic cycle of days and seasons produced by Earth\'s rotation on its axis and by its progression in orbit around the sun.
- What is a biological clock?
- Neural system that times behavior. Behavior driven by internal and external cues.
- What is a biological rhythm?
- molecular, physiological, or behavioral phenomenon, which cycles on a predictable basis
- What are the 4 types of biological rhythms? Explain each.
- Circannual rhythm- yearly cycle (migratory cycle) Circadian rhythms- daily cycle (day-night rhythms) Infradian- less than a day Ultradian- less than a year (menstrual cycle)
- What is a period?
- total time required to complete a cycle of activity
- What are free- running rhythms?
- Rhythm that runs by body\'s own devising when environmental cues are absent
- Explain how sleep periods are related to sleep related light periods. How are nocturnal species affected in constant light or constant darkness?
- Animals expand sleep periods as sleep related light period expands. Nocturnal species in constant darkness have free running periods little longer than 24 hours, but in constant light their free running periods are a little shorter than 24 hours.
- What is entrainment?
- \"resetting\" the clock by a zeitgeber; determines/modifies the period of a biorhythm
- What are zeitgebers?
- Environmentall cues that can reset the clock (\"time givers\")
- What can set a circadian clock?
- cues like sunrise, sunset, eating times
