- Spoils System
- Practice of rewarding supporters with government jobs. *
- William Henry Harrison
- Died one month into office. Caught pneumonia after giving a 4 hour acceptance speech after his inauguration.
- Sequoyah
- In 1821, he created a written alphabet for his people. Using his letters, Cherokee children learned to read and write.
- Nicholas Biddle
- President of the bank since 1823. Was especially disliked by Jackson. Came from wealthy Philadelphia family. Jackson felt that Biddle sued the Bank to benefit only the rich.
- Alexis de Tocqueville
- Was a visitor from France who became well known for his observations on American Democracy. Arrived in the U.S. in 1831. The French Government had sent him to study American prison systems. Described his observations in a book he wrote titled "Democracy in America."
- Nullification
- Idea that a state has the right to nullify or cancel a federal law that the state leaders consider to be unconstitutional. *
- Election of 1828
- Was on focused on issues at hand but the personalities of the candidates. Adams was seen as cold, hard and uncomfortable infront of people. Jackson wins the election easily.

- Supporters of Andrew Jackson; included frontier farmers and factory workers.

- The right to vote. *

- The right of states to limit the power of the federal government.
- Trail of Tears
- Forced journey of the Cherokee Indians from Georgia to a region west of the Mississippi during which thousands of Cherokees died.

- The use of insults to attack an opponents reputation. *
