- Judiciary Act 1789
- first Congress established a federal court system including federal district and appeals court
- War Hawks
- Southerners and Westerners who were eager for war with Britain. They had a strong sense of nationalism, and they wanted to takeover British land in North America and expand.

- Prohibited all American trade with foreign nations
- John Marshall
- He served in the Continental Army during the Revolution. In the 1790s he had embraced the Federalist Party. Marshall tossed the Republicans a few crumbs by ruling that the Supreme Court could not compel Madison to deliver Marbury's commission. Then he argued that the Court could not issue a writ of mandamus in its original jurisdiction. The 1st time the court had declared an act of Congress unconstitutional.
- XYZ Affair
- incident of the late 1790s in which French secret agents demanded a bribe and a loan to France in lieu of negotiating a dispute over the Jay Treaty and other issues
- Convention of 1800
- Agreement which freed America from its alliance with France, forgave French $20 million in damages and resulted in Adams' losing a second term as president
- Alien and Sedition Acts
- Acts passed by federalists giving the government power to imprison or deport foreign citizens and prosecute critics of the government
- Louisiana Purchase
- A territory in the west central United States purchased from France in 1803; extended from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and the gulf of Mexico to Canada. (p. 409)
- Marbury v/ Madison
- 1803 Supreme Court decision which established judicial review and was the first time an act of Congress was declared unconsitutional
- Alexander Hamilton
- Leading federalist and George Washington's Secretary of the Treasury
- John Adams
- 2nd U.S. President. 1979-1801. Federalist, He was the first President to live in the White House.
- Battle of New Orleans
- Battle in 1815 between American and British troops for control of New Orleans, ending in an American victory
- Impressment
- British practice of taking American sailors and forcing them into military service
- Thomas Jefferson
- 3rd U.S. President. 1801-1809. Democratic-Republican, Wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence
