- REM Sleep:
- Active or Paradoxical Sleep Rapid Eye Movement More Vivid dreams Heightened body activity (minus voluntary muscle movement) Heightened brain activity (mimicking awake state)
- NREM Sleep:
- Non-REM or Quiet Sleep No Rapid Eye Movement Less Bizarre dreams Body Activity (generally decreases) -- except voluntary movement Lowest levels of brain activity
- Stage 1 of NREM
- we sometimes suffer from a myoclonic jerk. An involuntary muscle spasm across the whole body which brings a person unexpectedly back to full wakefulness.*
- Stage 2 of NREM Sleep
- Mostly Theta Waves, but there are also bursts of activity.
- Sleep Spindles:
- Brief bursts of low voltage
- K Complex:
- High Voltage Spikes
- Stage 3 of NREM Sleep
- Mixture of Theta and Delta Waves

- Mostly Delta Waves (DEEP SLEEP) It’s hard to wake people up during stage 4 of NREM sleep Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Respiratory Rate, and Brain Activity drops to its lowest daily levels.
- Microsleep:
- Your body needs sleep and it will force you to get it. Microsleep consists of a brief few seconds of loss of consciousness.
- Sleep Rebound:
- When we deprive you of REM sleep, the next time you fall asleep you will spend more time in REM sleep & less time in NREM Sleep.
- Restorative Theory of Sleep
- NREM Sleep: Restores the body It is during NREM sleep that we are releasing growth hormones (hormones responsible for the sudden growth spurts we have). REM Sleep: Restores the mind Consolidating information from the day (forming new memories)* Forming New Synapses: Babies spend a lot of time in REM sleep.
- Sleep Paralysis:
- Muscular paralysis of sleep persists for a few moments past awakening.
- Addiction:
- Body and brain has physically changed in response to exposure to drug and now needs it to function.
- Self-awareness:
- Awareness of our specific internal thoughts and internal dialog (our individual sense of self).
- Suprachiasmatic Nucleus
- a cluster of neurons within our hypothalamus. (our biological clock)
