- A small body of water connecting two larger bodies of water.

- A piece of land surrounded by water on three sides.
- Bay
- A body of water partly surrounded by land.
- Physical Maps
- Shows physical features and landmarks in a specific area to identify it. Ex: Most classroom globes have bumps where all the mountains are, that is a physical map.

- Time Zones
- In Canada there are 6 time zones...or 5 ½. Approximately every 15 degrees of longitude time changes by an hour. There are 24 time zones in the world.

- Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario.
- Valley
- A low place between two mountains.
- Latitude and Longitude
- Longitude lines are lines that go vertically on maps. Latitude lines are lines that go horizontally on maps. Of course these maps are not physically on the planet.
- Climate Maps
- Used to show different forms of precipitation and weather common to specific areas. Cartographers and map makers use different colors to show these areas. Ex: if rain was the color blue, Fraser Valley would be all blue on the map.
- Archipelago
- A group of islands clustered together.
- Economic or Resource Maps
- Shows where natural resources come from in different areas. Cartographers and map makers use little symbols to identify what comes from where. Ex: some map makers might put symbols of oil wells in different sections of Alberta and the prairies

- These maps are most found in glove compartments in cars and show major highways, some minor ones, roads, cities, airports, train stations etc..
- Topographic (Contour) Maps
- These maps show elevations of mountains, plateaus and hills using contour lines.

- A body of water partly surrounded by land (larger than a bay).

- Red Sea, Arabian Sea and Black Sea.

- Significant Imaginary Lines
- Significant lines of latitude include the equator and the arctic circle, both represent the extremes of climate, the hottest place on Earth and the coldest.Significant lines of longitude include the Prime Meridian, 0 degrees, and the International Date Line, 180 degrees. The prime meridian goes directly down the middle of Greenwich, England so all of the Time Zones run according to the observation center there.
