- Contraband
- items siezed from the enemy during wartime. The union considered slaves contraband and therefore they had the right to give them freedom.
- war of attrition
- a type of war in which one side inflicts continous losses on the other in order to wear down its strengths

- a presidential decree by president Lincoln effective Jan 1, 1863 that freed slaves in Confederate held territory

- during the civil war an anti -war northern democrat
- Advantages of south
- trained officers, only needed to defend itself, and fighting for a way of life.
- vicksburg
- The union forces wanted to capture Vicksburg in order to control to Mississippi River. (Union) Gen. Grant surrounded Vicksburg and bombed it for a month. The people and Confederate soldiers starved until they surrendered.

- name given to the national paper currency in 1862

- McCellan
- Union general that Lincoln considered too cautious. Under him the union had many casulites at the Battle of Seven Pines. Lincon fired him several times.
- Stonewall Jackson
- Southern General under the command of Robert Lee whose troops refused to retreat at first battle of Bull Run
- France and Britain
- The south hoped that they would help but they didn't. The only thing that Britain did was allow the south to build ships in British ports.
- Battle of Antietam
- Civil war battle in in maryland in 1862. Lee was trying to invade the north bloodest day of the civil war 26,000 casulties.
