- volume
- the amount of space a substance or object occupies
- atom
- an extremely small amount of matter
- mixture
- a substance made by combining two or more different materials in such a way that no chemical reaction occurs
- solvent
- a substance, usually a liquid, that dissolves another substance
- viscous
- having a thick, sticky consistency between a solid and a liquid; having a high viscosity
- cohesion
- the sticking together of particles of the same substance
- solution
- a mixture of one substance dissolved in another so the properties are the same throughout
- density
- how tightly packed together the matter is within a substance
- displaced
- to remove; to take over the place or position of something
- physical change
- a change that affects the size, shape or color of a substance but does not affect its composition; new substance is not formed
- emulsifier
- a food additive used to keep oils spread throughout in a suspension; mayonnaise and peanut butter
- mass
- the quantity of matter a body of material contains
- matter
- a substance or material; everything is made of this
- oxide
- a chemical combination of oxygen atom(s) with a metallic or non metallic matter (element)
- solute
- a substance that is dissolved in another substance
- emulsion
- a suspension of small particles of one liquid in a second liquid with which the first will not mix
- viscosity
- "thickness" of a liquid or its ability to flow; usually the warmer the liquid get the more it will flow
- surface tension
- the attraction of molecules to each other on a liquid's surface; a barrier is created between the air and the liquid
- chemical change
- changes substances undergo when they become new or different substances
- suspension
- a mixture in which fine particles are suspended in a fluid where they are supported by buoyancy
- rusting
- occurs when oxygen comes in long-term contact with certain metals
