- streak
- the color of a minerals powder.
- gemstone
- a hard, colorful mineral that has a brilliant or glassy luster.
- erosion
- running water, wond or ice loosen and carry away fragments of rock.
- Metamorphic rock
- forms when an exsting rock is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reaction.
- grains
- particles of minerals or other rocks.
- Sedimentary rock
- forms when particles of other rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together.
- texture
- look and feel of the rock's surface.
- cleavage
- a mineral that splits easily alongflat surfaces.
- ore
- A rock that contians a metal or other useful minerals that can be mined and sold at a profit.
- vein
- a narrow channel or slab of a mineral that is different form the surrounding rock.
- alloy
- a solid mixture of two or more elements, at leastone of which is a metal.
- cementation
- the process in which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles od sediment together.
- luster
- used to describe how light is reflected from a mineral's surface.
- smelting
- an ore is mixed with other substances and then melted to seperate the useful metal from other elements the ore contians.
- tectonic plates
- the uplifted, folding, and fualting that move rocks through the rock cycle are cuased by movements on?
- sediment
- small, solid pieces of material that comes from rocks or living things.
- cementation
- dissolved minerals and particals of sediment stick together to form sedimentary rock.
- calcium
- A mineral that forms the skeleton of coral animals.
- fracture
- describes how a mineral looks when it breaks apart in an irregular way.
- rock cycle
- slowly changes rocks from one kind to another kind.
- Mohs hardness scale
- A scale ranking 10 minerals from softest to hardest; used in testing the hrdness of minerals.
- solution
- a mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another.
- coral reef
- structures that are found only in warm, clear ocean waters, the skeletons of tiny ocean animals grow to form this.
- Deposition
- the process by which sediment settles out of the water or wind carring it.
- Intrusive rock
- Igneous rock that formed when magma hardened beneath Earth's surface.
- mineral
- A naturually occurring, inorganic solid that has a crystal structure and a definite chemical composition.
- basalt
- A dark-colored rock that is low in silica.
- Igneous Rock
- forms from cooling of magma or lava
- Extrusive rock
- An igneos rock that is formed from lava that erupted on earths surface.
- crystallization
- the prosses by which atoms are arranged to form a material with a crystal structure.
- granite
- a light-colored rock that has high silica content
- crystal
- A solid in which the atoms are arranged in a pattern that repeats again and again.
- geode
- a rounded, holow rock that is often lined with mineral crystals.
- limestone
- is made from ancient coral reefs buried by sediment.
