What is conciousness?
The immediate awareness of internal and external stimuli.
What does "stream" of conciousness mean?
It means that conciousness is continuous.
What are circadian rhythms? Give an example.
Circadian Rhythms are the biological processes that systematically vary over a period of about 24 hours. Sleep/Wake cycles are examples of Circadian Rhythms.
What is the Suprechiastmatic Nucles?
The SCN is the internal pacemaker that governs the timing of circadian rhythms, including sleep/wake cycles and the mental alertness cycle.
What is Melatonin?
A hormone manufactored by the pineal gland that produces sleepiness.
What is an Electroencephalograph?
An instrument that uses electrodes placed on the scalp to measure and record the brain's eletrical activity.
What is an Electroencephalogram?
The EEG is a graphic record of brain activity produced by an electroencephalograph.
What is REM Sleep?
REM (Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep is the type of sleep during which dreaming usually occurs and voluntary muscle activity is supressed. It is during this time that memories are consolidated.
What is NREM Sleep?
NREM (Non-REM) Sleep is quiet, typically dreamless sleep in which rapid eye movements are absent. NREM sleep is divided into four stages.
What are Sleep Spindles?
Sleep Spindles appear during NREM Phase 2 sleep, they are brief bursts of brain activity that last for a second or two.
What are K-Complexes?
K-Complexes are single high-voltage spikes in brain activity.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Condition where the sleeper repeatedly stops breathing during sleep.
What is RLS?
Restless Leg Syndrome, persons complain of an unpleasant creeping, crawling, tingling, itching, or prickling sensation deep inside their lower legs accompanied by an irresistible urge to move.
What is Insomnia?
Condition where a person ahs trouble sleeping, or staying asleep.
What is Somnambulism?
Sleep-Walking
What are Night Terrors?
Like Sleep-Walking, occur during stage 3 or 4 of NREM sleep.
What are parasomnias?
A general category of sleep disorders that involve arousal or activation during sleep or sleep transitions (Example : Bruxism)
What is REM Sleep Behavoir Disorder?
A sleep disorder in which the sleeper acts out his or her dreams.
What is Narcolepsy?
Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and brief lapses into sleep throughout the day.
What is Cataplexy?
A sudden loss of voluntary muscle strength and control that is usually triggered by an itnense emotion. Cataplexy usually accompanies Narcolepsy.
What is Sleep Thinking?
Repetitive, bland, and uncreative ruminations about real-life events, during sleep.
What is a Dream?
A story-like episode of unfolding mental imagery during sleep.
