- Great Compromise
- It called for 2 house legislature. Lower-House of representatives/seats based on population. Upper- Senate/each state gets 2 senators. The problem was, would slavery be counted as part of a state's population?

- First 10 Amendments to the Constitution. Written by James Madison
- What Was The Articles Of Confederation?
- It was America's first constitution, Created a firm league of friendship among the 13 states. States would send delegates to a Confederation Congress, each state has one vote in Congress. Congress could declare war, appoint military officers, and coin money. Congress could not regulate trade and pass laws about taxes.
- 3 Branches of Government
- Legislative- asses the laws, Congress (House of Representatives and Senate) Executive- Carries out the laws (president) Judicial- Court System (Supreme Court)
- Who Had The Right To Vote?
- White males, 21 and older and they had to own a certain amount of land or pay a certain amount of taxes. New Jersey was the only state that let some women vote
- New Jersey Plan
- Proposed by William Paterson. 3 branches of government. One house legislature. Each state gets one vote.
- Problems With The Articles of Confederation
- National government was weak, no president, and it said nothing about admitting new states to the US
- Why Did They Have State Constitutions?
- During the war, most states wrote their own constitution, they wrote them because they needed to spell out the rights of all citizens and to set limits on government's power
- Problems With The National Government
- People were loyal to their states, States were unwilling to turn over power to the 13 states.
- Shay's Rebellion
- It was in Massachusetts. Daniel Shay was a farmer in debt. He led a revolt attacking courthouses to prevent the sale of farmers' property as payment for debts. Massachusetts' militia was sent.
- Three-Fifths Compromise
- Agreement that 3/5 of the slaves in any state be counted in its population.
- Virginia Plan
- Proposed by James Madison and Edmund Randolph. It called for a strong national government with 3 branches, legislative, executive, and judicial. It called for a 2 house legislature, seats were awarded on population, the problem was the larger states with have more reps. The problem was the small states objected to the plan because they would always be outvoted by larger states.
- Anti Federalists
- Opposed the Constitution because there was no bill of rights
- Federalists
- Favored a strong national government. Wrote Series of essays, The Federalist Papers, defending the Constitution (James Madison and Alexander Hamilton)
