-William Paterson -3 branches of government -1 house legistature -each state got one vote
Problems with the Articles of Confederation?
-national government weak -no president -said nothing about admitting new states to the US
Federalists
-favored a strong national government -wrote a series of essays, The Federalist Papers defending the constitution -James Madison + Alexander Hamilton
Right To Vote?
White males age 21&over, had to own a certain amount of land or pay a certain amount of taxes, NJ let women vote
Great Compromise
-July 17 1777 -called for a 2 house legistature +lower house of reps +upper senate [each state got 2 senators] -problem: would slaves be counted as population?
Virginia Plan?
-James Madison and Edmund Randolph -called for a strong national governemt with 3 branches -called for a 2 house legislature -seats awarded on population -problem: large state would have more reps than small states and they would be outvoted
