Andrew Johnson
17th President of the United States was elected Vice President and succeeded Lincoln when Lincoln was assassinated; was impeached but acquitted by one vote (1808-1875) (favored the South over the North)
Dred Scott
United States slave who sued for liberty after living in a non-slave state;caused the Supreme Court to declare the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional (1795?-1858)
Emancipation Proclamation
Issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862, it declared that all slaves in the rebellious Confederate states would be free,not the boarder states
Kansas- Nebraska Act
A law that allowed the people in kansas and nebraska to decide of slavery would be legal.
Compromise of 1850
Series or measures that were intended to settle the disagreements between free states and slave states
Harriet Tubman
United States abolitionist born a slave on a plantation in Maryland and became a famous conductor on the Underground Railroad leading other slaves to freedom in the North (1820-1913)
Compromise of 1877
Ended Reconstruction. Republicans promise 1) Remove military from South, 2) Appoint Democrat to cabinet (David Key postmaster general), 3) Federal money for railroad construction and levees on Mississippi river; as long as Hayes became the president
Reconstruction
the period after the Civil War in the United States when the southern states were reorganized and reintegrated into the Union 1865-1877
Know-Nothing Party
Aka the American party; made religions as well particulary in NE anti-catholic and Nativist party hoped to prolong the naturaliztion process weaening immigrant influence.
John Brown
abolitionist who was hanged after leading an unsuccessful raid at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (1800-1858);lead a slave revolt by capturing Armories in southern territory and giving weapons to slaves
