- habitat
- the place in which an organism lives out its life and where resources such as food, water, space, and shelter are shared among different species
- community
- all the populations living in an area who depend on each other for food, shelter, and other assorted needs
- decomposers
- organisms, such as bacteria or fungi, that feed on dead organisms and the waste material of other organisms
- producer
- an organism, such as a plant, that is able to use energy from the sun to make its own food
- endangered species
- a species with so few living members that it is in danger of becoming extinct
- ecology
- the study of all the interactions between living and non-living parts of an ecosystem
- limiting factor
- a factor that controls the size of a population EX: the availability of food or amount of rainfall
- niche
- the role, or job of and organism in an ecosystem
- population
- a group of the same type of organisms living in the same place at the same time
- biosphere
- the part of Earth in which organisms can live; includes the topmost part of Earth's crust, the surrounding atmosphere, and all the rivers, lakes, and oceans
- biotic factor
- all the organisms that make up the living parts of an ecosystem, including trees, birds, bacteria, and frogs
- ecosystem
- a working unit made up of organisms interacting with each other and with non-living factors
- abiotic factor
- all the non-living parts of an ecosystem, including air, soil, water and temperature
- consumer
- an organisms that eats other organisms
- threatened species
- a species that is in need of protection but is not immediate danger of extinction
