- igneous rock
- rock that forms from cooling of molten rock or rock below the surface
- cementation
- the process by which dissolved minerals crystalize and glue particles of sediment together into one mass
- characteristics used to classify igneous rocks
- origin, texture and mineral composition
- coral reef
- a structure of calcite skeletons built by coral animals in warm shallow water
- 3 types of sedimentary rocks
- clastic, organic anc chemical
- 3 types of rocks
- sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous
- chemical rock
- sedimentary rock that forms when minerals crystalize from a solution
- foliated
- term used to describe metamorphic rocks whose grains are arranged in parallel layers or bands
- characteristics used to classify rocks
- color, texture and mineral composition
- rock cycle
- a series of processes on the surface and inside Earth that slowly changes rocks from one kind to another
- sedimentary rock
- type of rock that forms when particles from other rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together
- conditions under which metamorphic rock forms
- when an existing rock is changed by heat, pressure or chemical reactions deep underground
- sediment
- small solid particles of material from rocks or organisms which are moved by water or wind resulting in erosion and deposition
- texture
- look that results from size, shape & pattern of the rock's grains
- clastic rock
- sedimentary rock that forms when rock fragments are squeezed together under high pressure
- metamorphic rock
- type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure or chemical reactions
- grain
- particle of a mineral or other rock that gives a rock it's texture
- how do coral reefs become organic limestone deposits on land?
- Coral reef are really organic limestone that began as coral. Over time the coral is buried by sediments. The limestone can be found on Earth in places where uplift has raised the sea floors above sea level.
- organic rock
- sedimentary rock that forms where remains of organisms are deposited in thick layers
- intrusive rock
- igneous rock that forms when magma hardens between Earth's surface
- deposition
- the process by which sediment settles out of the water or wind that is carrying it, and is deposited in a new location
- atoll
- a ring shaped coral island found far from land
- compaction
- the process by which sediments are pressed together under their own weight
- porphyritic texture
- an igneous rock texture in which large crystals are scattered on a background of much smaller crystals
- extrusive rock
- igneous rock that forms from lava on Earth's surface
- how geologists classify metamorphic rock
- arrangement of grains that make up the rock
- how sedimentary rocks form
- through the deposition, compaction and cementation of sediments
