- U.S. broke Japanese Navy code, met them w/ 2 carriers,
- 7 MAY, Japanese planes sunk 2 minor ships while U.S. planes sank 1 carrier,
- 8 MAY, both sides launched planes, it became the first carrier vs carrier battle,
- 1 JA carrier damaged, USS Lexington was sunk & USS Yorktown was damaged,
- Both sides withdrew, but became a strategic setback for JA who never again threatened Australia.

- In pre-WWI days, Navy carried out its role as a diplomatic arm of the government,
- 16 DEC 1907, the Great White Fleet left Hampton Roads, VA for a round-the-world cruise to show the flag.
- This exercise demontrated the strength of the U.S. Navy.

- 6 JUN 1944, Navy's most notable Atlantic action - invasion of Normandy (the largest amphibious op in history),
- Minesweeping, shore-bombardment, amphibious ops, & transportation of supplies & troops were carried out,
- These operations enabled the allies to complete D-Day landings successfully & eventually push on to Germany.

- 3-5 JUN 1942, the turning point of the Pacific war.
- U.S. broke JA code,(again),
- Commanders-in-Chiefs involved were ADM Yamamoto & ADM Nimitz.
- 4 JA carriers & 11 battleships vs 3 U.S. carriers, (Yorktown, Enterprise & Hornet),
- U.S. planes eventually sunk 4 JA carriers, & JA planes sunk the Yorktown,
- In one day JA lost its bid for control of the Pacific.

- 13-15 NOV 1942, After 3 days of fighting, JA naval forces retreated & U.S. Marines secured island of Guadalcanal,
- The bloodiest & most costly battle in the Marine Corps history.
- USS Juneau was involved & JA lost 2 cruiser & 6 destroyers,
- 5 Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa refused to be separated & became crew members of USS Juneau,
- USS Juneau was damaged in a close-range nite encounter, then later torpedoed & Sullivan brothers along with 700 others were lost. Following this tragedy, Navy policy reinstated its policy about family member separation,
- A ship was later named in their honor.
Discuss the importance of the conflict as it relates to manual history: Battle of Leyte Gulf.
- 23 OCT 1944, final blow to JA navy,
- JA naval forces attempted to attack the U.S. fleet at Leyte Gulf, but plan backfired,
- Loss of the Philippines severed the JA empire & their homeland was cut off from its main source of supply from the south,
- This became the last time the battleships would ever again fight one another.
Discuss the conditions that led to the formation of the U.S. Navy.
- Mid 1700's, the King of England allowed colonies to trade, ONLY with England, which led to problems between colonists & England.
- English parliament passed the "taxation w/out representation" law, which affected the colonists,
- Colonists formed Committes of Correspondence to voice problems to England, which led to a Continental Congress to discuss these problems,
- 5 SEP 1774, first Congress met, statement of rights were made, & in OCT 1774, these rights were presented to the King of England.
- 10 MAY 1775, 2nd Continental Congress convene,
- 15 JUN 1775, Colonists appointed George Washington as C-I-C of the Continental American Army,
- Continental Congress felt forced to act as the provisional gov of the colonies, & created the Continental Navy.
- In order to survive British aggression, the colonies would have to control the seaways that led to America, & thus the U.S. Navy was born (13 OCT 1775),
- The 2nd Continental Congress authorized the purchas of 2 vessels,
- First C-I-C was Esek Hopkins, (put 1st squadron of the Continental Navy to sea in FEB 1776).
State the qualities that characterize the Navy/Marine Corps team as instruments to support national policies.
Readiness, flexibity, self-sustainability & mobility. They permit naval forces to be expeditionary, able to establish & maintain a forward-based stabilizing presence around the world,
- The U.S. Navy/Marine Corps team has several primary missions that help support national polices: From strategic deterence to sea control to sustainable amphibious assault & naval bombardment, naval presence has always been a key factor in preventing aggression from belligerent countries. Only thru the joint efforts of the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps can such goals as freedom & peace be achieved.
State the three levels of war.
The"levels of War" help place in perspective the causes & effects of our specific objectives, plannings & actions.
- Tactical (involves the details of individual engagements),
- Operational (concerns forces collectively in a theater),
- Strategic (focuses on supporting national goals).
State the mission of Naval Logistics.
The basic mission of naval logistics is support the fleet. This support consists of at-sea replenishment, consumable material, ordnance, repair parts & equipment.
- Logistic support system has two major components: fleet-based sustainment assets & strategic sustainment assets.
State the importance of planning to Naval Operations.
The importance of planning is to ensure that the Navy's mission can be carried out properly & efficiently. A plan is prepared is using either the joint deliberate-planning or crisis-action procedures. From ship movement to supplying the fleet require proper planning maximizing effectiveness as well as safety for the crews involved. Elements of planning produce a concept of operations based on the commander's estimate, courses of action, situation analysis, execution strategy,. & intent.
