- SECTIONALISM
- This is when people are more loyal to their states or regions than to the country as a whole. (Loyal to Georgia over being loyal to The U.S.)
- POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY
- The notion that people should have the right to rule themselves.
- SECEDE
- To leave the United States.
- COMPROMISE OF 1850
- Proposals that gave both sides their demands.
- STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS
- A young senator from Illinois.
- FREE-SOIL PARTY
- A political party founded in 1848 by antislavery Whigs and Democrats; which freed soil, speech, labor, and men.
- DANIEL WEBSTER
- A congressman, then Senator from Massachusettes who wanted the U.S. to return to harmony and quiet.
- FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT
- This act made it a crime to help run-away enslaved persons.
- KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT
- This act ended the political truce over slavery.
- HARRIET BEECHER STOWE
- She came from a family of well-known educators and clergy. She used her experience to write Uncle Tom's Cabin, a novel about slavery and plantation life.
- DRED SCOTT
- A once enslaved man who was bought by a family that moved from a slave state to a free state. Scott sued for his freedom because he had lived in a free state. This became a Supreme Court Case.
- SOJOURNER TRUTH
- A female former slave who was freed when NY banned slavery. She changed her name and worked for abolition and women's rights.
- ROGER B. TANEY
- The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who said Dred Scott had no right to sue in Federal Court.
- REPUBLICANS
- Members of the Whigs and Democratic party who opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act joined Free-Soilers and became anti-Nebraska group which became Republicans.
- DEBATE
- A public discussion.
- FREEPORT DOCTRINE
- The explanation by Stephen A. Douglas for the problem over popular sovereignty in the territories.
- JOHN C. FREMONT
- A Western explorer and leader of the California uprisisng against Mexico. "Free Men, Free Soil, Fremont"
- JAMES BUCHANAN
- Democratic president from Pennsylvania (our only president). He was a diplomat and former Congressman, but not the best president.
- HOMESTEAD ACT
- Congress passed this act offering free land to settlers, but it was vetoed by President Buchanan.
- ARMORY
- A storehouse for weapons.
- CRITTENDEN PLAN
- Senator John Crittenden's plan to save the Union using several amendments including allowing slavery where it already exists, etc.
- JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE
- A supporter of the Dred Scott decision who was chosen by southern Democrats in the race for president.
- WILMOT PROVISO
- This was introduced by anti-slavery Democrat David Wilmot. It outlaws slavery in all territories acquired from Mexico. It was defeated in the Senate.
- ALEXANDER STEPHENS
- "Their cause, and their destiny is my destiny." He wanted the Georgia legislature not to act against the federal government unless the South was acted upon.
