San Andreas Fault
An area in California where the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate slide past each other with jerks and jolts, frequently causing earthquakes
P Waves
The fastest type of seismic waves; can travel through solids, liquids, and gases; also known as pressure waves and primary waves,
S Waves
The second-fastest type of seismic waves, cannot travel through materials that are completely liquid; also known as shear waves and secondary waves.
seismograph
An instrument located at or near the surface of the Earth that records seismic waves
Gap Hypothesis
This states that sections of active faults that have had relatively few earthquakes are likely to be the sites of strong earthquakes in the future
seismogram
The tracing of Earthquake motion created on paper by a seismograph
Moho
a place within earth where the speed of seismic waves increases sharply. This makes the boundary between the crust and the mantle.
Earthquake Hazard
This measures how prone an area is to experiencing earthquakes in the future. It is determined by past and present seismic activity
Focus
the point inside the Earth where an Earthquake begins
Seismic Gaps
The areas along a fault where relatively few earthquakes have occured
seismologist
scientist that studies earthquakes
Deformation
The change in the shape of rock in response to stress. Two types: plastic and elastic
Seismic Waves
Waves of energy that travel through Earth. Two types are body and surface
Elastic Rebound
a sudden return of elastically deformed rock to its original shape. During this, rock releases energy that causes Earthquakes.
Epicenter
the point on the Earth's surface directly above an Earthquake's starting point
Love Waves
Seismic waves that reach the surface last (slowest). They cause the most damage.
Seismology
the study of earthquakes
Richter Scale
This is commonly used to measure earthquake strength
Shadow Zone
an area on the Earth's surface where no direct seismic waves from a particular earthquake can be detected. This discovery suggests that the Earth has a liquid core.
Rayleigh Waves
Seismic waves that reach the surface with up and down movement
