- biomes
- classified into main areas, and biomes and aquatic biomes.
- estuaries
- found at boundary between fresh and salt water. mixture of salt and freshwater. its shallow so photosynthesis can occur, suitable for aquatic plants which supports types of fish, shrimp, invertebrates. some use it as a nesting ground and several bird species reside here
- Abiotic
- non-living factors, physical features
- deserts
- less than 25 cm of rain a year. almost no growth, sagebrush and cacti survive. cold deserts are found in mountains and plateaus.
- freshwater
- rivers, streams, lakes, drinking water. beginning to be used as dumping grounds.
- Marine
-
Vast ocean, split up into five generic zones:
-photic (shallow, allows photosynthesis)
-intertidal (most difficult for organisms to live)
-nertic-extends from low tide to edge of ocean
-sea-close to shore, has many nutrients
-deep sea-high pressure, low temps & total darkness - Biosphere
- Part of the Earth in which life exists, they are organized into ecosystems.
- biotic
- community of living organisms
- population
- collection of individuals of the same species in a given area whose members can breed with one another
- climax community
- relatively stable collection of organisms that result from ecological succession
- Tundra
- covered in permafrost meaning premanently frozen subsoil. in a cycle of thawing and freezing
- taiga
- a coniferious forest (home to redwoods), cold winters and mild summers
- temperate deciduous forests
- changing seasons, trees shed their leaves (ex. oak, maple, birch)
- grasslands
- covered in grasses and small leafy plants, includes prairies and plains, savannas
- tropical rainforest
- warm temperature. with rainfall of 200-400 meters per year. rich and varied organisms. many of which produce chemicals that combat disease. biome that is dissapearing the quickest.
