Stock Market crashed-great depression begins. Too many products people weren't buying NO ONE, US or outside-US banks closing, losing jobs, drought. Black Thursday stock market crashed Oct 24, 1929. Public School employyes, no pay.

Autin Peay governor. Defeated Alf Taylor. TN was over 3 million dollard in debt. After 2 1/2 terms died. 3 terms got us out of debt.

State wide prohibition law passed. 1919 Prohibition in US (moonshine) 1933 repeated in TN very emotional issue

Scoped Monkey Trial. John Butler-Macon County introduced a bill to have only biblical taught in public schools-passed. Rhea County Thomas Scopes taught evolution and was arrested. Tried in Dayton, TN. Found gulity and charged $100 fine he got arrested & went to court-the judge wasn't suppose to set fine-jury did

Brown vs. Board of Education. Civil Rights. Schools for black people - 1 school for black, 1 for white. A black child tried to go to a white school to get better educated. Brown sued school board and won. Opened integration of public schools in US.

State Board of Education. Prior to this TN education system was set up in countries, not state

Voting Rights Act. Blacks could register to vote. Became important in the decision making of America.

Albert Gore, Jr., Vice President under Pres Clinton. Ran for president in 2000 (lost).

State constitutional convention. Black males right to vote. Poll tax - must pay a tax to vote and the money would fo to education. Really bad for the poor. Slaves were free - some stayed to work for them.
