Project Mgmt
Terms
- Activity (or task)
- an element of work normally found on the WBS that has an expected duration, a cost, and resource requirements.
- Summary Task
- a task that is broken down into more detailed tasks
- Activity definition
-
process of identifying specific activities.
- Activity sequencing
-
process of ordering of activities and determining dependencies between activities.
- Activity resource estimating
-
process of determining types and amounts of resources (people, equipment, materials, etc.) needed for each activity
- Activity duration estimating
- process of determining how long will each activity take
- Schedule development
-
process of determining when activities will be performed
- Schedule control
-
process of monitoring progress and managing changes to the timetable of activities.
- Milestone
-
an event that marks the culmination of a major phase, phases, or tasks in a project.
- Predecessor
- activity that must be completed before another activity can begin
- Dependency
- relationship between two or more activities
- Mandatory dependency
- required; hard logic
- Discretionary dependency
- by the project team; soft logic
- External dependency
-
involve relationships between project and non-project activities
- Network diagram
-
a diagram that shows the sequence of activities in the project using boxes (nodes) and arrows.
- Finish-to-Start Dependency (FS)
-
given two tasks A and B, A must finish before B can start
- Start-to-Start Dependency (SS)
-
given two tasks A and B, they must start at the same time
- Finish-to-Finish Dependency (FF)
-
given two tasks A and B, they must finish at the same time
- Start-to-Finish Dependency (SF)
-
given two tasks A and B, B cannot finish until A starts
- Duration
- amount of time worked on activity plus elapsed (unused) time.
- Effort
- number of work hours or workdays used/needed to accomplish a task.
- Gantt Chart
-
a standard format for displaying a project schedule using horizontal bars (Ex. See Figure 6-6)
- Estimated time (using PERT)
-
(best case + worst case + (4*most likely case)) / 6
- Early Start Date
- The earliest possible time that you can begin an activity
- Early Finish Date
- The earliest possible time that you can complete an activity
- Late start date
-
The latest possible time that you can begin an activity without delaying the project completion date.
- Late finish date
-
The latest possible time you can complete an activity without effect the project completion date.
- Slack time
-
the amount of time by which an activity can be delayed without delaying the project.
-
Earned value management (EVM)
-
- Quality Planning
Quality standards can be established for:
1.
Quality Assurance
Benchmarks – standards for performance established by other projects or products
Quality Control
Main outcomes of quality control
·
Tools and Techniques for Quality Control
·
Pareto analysis
· Statistical sampling
select a portion (or sample) of the products for quality review
Deliverables
- products produced as a result of the project
- Methodology
- processes involved in creating the products
- Scope planning
- determine how the scope will be defined
- Scope definition
clarify project charter and preliminary scope statement by adding more details
- Scope verification
get formal acceptance of the scope
- Scope control
- – manage change to the scope
- Scope management plan
a document that describes how the project team will carry out processes above (scope planning, scope definition, etc.). Key inputs include:
- Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
document that shows all the work that needs to be done in the project.
·
- Analogy approach
- – tailor a similar project’s WBS to your needs
- Top-down approach
- start with large tasks/items – break them down
- Bottom-up approach
– start with detailed tasks/items – roll them up into more general ones.
- Mind-mapping
- write tasks and subtasks in non-linear graphical form
- WBS dictionary
a document that gives a detailed description of each WBS task.
- Scope baseline
the approved project scope statement and WBS.
- Variance
- the difference between planned and actual performance.
