family/group
elements in the same vertical column on the periodic table. named by first element in group. all elements in a group share some characteristics
metalloid
an element that has the properties of both metals and nonmetals
subatomic particles
the parts that make up an atom. (protons, neutrons, electrons)
malleable
a material that can be pounded into shapes
period
a horizantal row of elements on the periodic table. elements in the same period have similar properties
stable
an atom that has almost the same number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus.
unstable
an atom in which the number of protons and neutrons are very different
element
a pure substance that cannot be broken down by chemical or physical means
indirect evidence
the strategy used to learn about things too small, large, or dangerous to be seen
nonmetal
an element that lacks most of the properties of a metal
isotope
the different versions of an element with different amounts of neutrons
atom
the smallest part of an element that still has the properties of that element
atomic number
the number of protons and electrons in an element. the periodic table is organized by atomic number.
radioactive
a substance that spontaneously emits radiation from an unstable nucleus.
nucleus
the central core of an atom containing protons and neutrons.
quark
the particles that make up protons and neutrons. 3 quarks make up 1 proton or neutron.
neutron
the neutral subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom.
proton
the positively charged subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom.
metal
a class of elements characterized by physical properties such as malleability, ductility, and shininess
mass number
the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an element
electron configuration
the number of electrons in each energy level
electron
a negatively charged subatomic particle that circles the nucleus on energy levels.
molecule
a particle made of 2 or more atoms bonded together
chemical symbol
the 1 or 2 letter symbol representing an elements name on the periodic table
valence electron
the electrons used to combine with other elements. found on the outermost shell.
naturally occuring
an element that is found in nature, not man made
ductile
able to be pulled into a long wire
energy level
the different levels on which electrons orbit on
atomic mass
the weight/mass of an atom of a given element
