- What is a CVA
-
* Sudden interruption of
blood flow to a part of
the brain.
* Kills brain cells and
impairs body functions
controlled by that part
of the brain
* Medical emergency - What is a TIA?
-
* It is a transient
ischemic attack.
* Temporary interruption of
blood supply to an area
of the Brain
* They are considered
warnings - Controllable risk factors are?
-
* Hypertension
* Heart disease (A-fib)
* Cigarette smoking
* Excessive alcohol intake
* High Cholesterol level
* Obesity - Uncontrollable risk factors are?
-
* Increasing age
* Male sex
* Black race
* diabetes
* Previous stroke or TIA
* Family Hx of stroke or TIA - Ischemic refers to what?
-
* An embolism or thrombus
which obstructs the
cerebral artery and
blocks the flow of blood
to the brain - What does an embolism do?
-
* It causes a sudden
deficit and usually
occurs later in the day. - What is the classification of a TIA?
- TIA can last from 30 minutes to 24 hours. It is mostly thrombotic. A person that has a TIA is at a greater risk for a CVA
- Lasts longer than 24 hours, leaves no residual deficits after days to weeks (long TIA). Some consider this a complete stroke with no residual deficit. What is this?
- A Reversible Ischemic neurologic Deficit (RIND)
- A progressing stroke developed over a period of hours to days.
- Stoke in Evolution
- An ischemic area surrounding infarct is called what?
- Penumbra
