Poems
Repitition of consonant sounds in a sentence of verse.
Alliteration
A comparision of two things that does not use the words "like" or "as".

"Gray cat winter prowls the farm."
Metaphor
A comparison of two things that uses "like" or "as".

"The road was as windy as a piece of ribbon candy."
Simile
A vivid description of things seen, heard, smelled, touched and tasted.

"The golden sunlight flashing."
Imagery
A comparison between a non human with a human (Giving the non human, human characteristics.)

"The daffodils tossed their heads in an enegetic dance."
Personification
A repition of a consonant sound at the beginning of words in a sentence or verse.

"Princess Prunella lived in a pink palace."
Alliteration
A group of consecutive lines in a poem that form a single unit; a poetry paragraph.
Stanza
Overstating the truth.

"Usher is the best singer in the world."
Exaggeration
An expression whose meaning cannot be understood by knowing the words that form it.(These expressions should never be taken literally."

"raining cats and dogs."
Idiom
An extreme exaggeration that writers use for effect.

"From the top of the mountain you can see forever."
Hyperbole
A repetition of vowel sounds in words that are close together.

"The bee will see the tree."
Assonance
The use of rhyming words within a line of poetry.

"Mary. Mary, quite contrary,..."
Internal rhyme
Repeating words and phrases.

"So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops fo New Hampshire.
Let freedom ring from....
Let freedom ring from..."
Repetition
The meter or the stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem.

"Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
(every other syllable is stressed.)
Rhythm
The pattern in which words in with the same sounds.

"I think that I shall never see,
A poem lovely as a tree."
