- Meiosis
- the process of making haploid cells from diploid cells (the making of sex cells from reproductive cells)
- Pedigree
- family record that shows inheritance
- Sex-Linked
- genes connected to the X chromosomes; hemophilia
- Homozygous
- the genes in the pair are the same (BB or bb)
- Recessive
- the "weaker" gene; the one that gets masked
- Phenotype
- the physical expression of the code (can't curl tongue)
- Mendel
- the "father of genetics" - known for studying peas
- Alleles
- different forms (options) of a gene; b or B
- Genotype
- the coding for the trait (cc)
- Incomplete Dominance
- involves "blending" of options (pink flowers)
- Mitosis
- process that makes new cells for growth & repair
- Homologous
- chromosomes that are similar in size, shape, and the traits they code for (maternal & paternal)
- Haploid
- cells containing 1/2 the number of chromosomes
- Dominant
- the "stronger" gene; the one that gets expressed
- Zygote
- the first cell made when egg & sperm unite
- Diploid
- cells containing a full set of chromosomes; body cells
- Reproductive Cell
- the only kind of cell that can go through the process of meiosis
- Polygenic
- features controlled by many genes; height
- Codominance
- involves "sharing" of options (black & white chicken)
- Heterozygous
- the genes in the pair are different (Bb)
- Fertilization
- the uniting of egg & sperm
- Multiple Alleles
- involves a trait with more than 2 options; blood types
- Gamete
- sex cell; egg, sperm
