- Recombinant DNA
- DNA produced by combining DNA from two or more different sources.
- Plasmid
- a circular DNA molecule that is usually found in bacteria and that can replicate independent of the main chromosome
- Sticky Ends
- Single stranded ends of DNA left after cutting with enzymes
- Restriction Enzyme
- enzyme that cuts DNA at a specific sequence of nucleotides
- Transgenic Organisms
- Organisms that contain foreign genes
- Host
- an organism that supports a parasite
- Gel Electrophoresis
- procedure used to separate and analyze DNA fragments by placing a mixture of DNA fragments at one end of a porous gel and applying an electrical voltage to the gel
- How bands separate
- the shorter strands travel through the gel quicker than the longer strands
- Direction of flow based on charge
- attracted to the positive charged side
- Probes
- radioactive segments of DNA that are complementary to the segments being compared
- PCR
- make many copies of selected segments of the available DNA
- purpose of PCR
- to make more copies for DNA fingerprinting
- DNA Fingerprinting
- a pattern of bands made up of specific fragments from an individual's DNA
- Purpose of DNA fingerprinting
- to tel if two individuals are related
- Process used to complete
- gel electrophoresis
- Cloning
- the process of producing an offspring by asexual production
