- Arctic Circle
- 66.5º S line of latitude, near the South Pole, beginnings the High latitude region
- Cardinal Directions
- North, South, West, & East the four compass points
- Compass Rose
- A model or picture of a compass found on a map, they show the directions, sometimes it has the four cardinal directions, just North or it can include the intermediate directions too.
- Degree
- A unit of measure, latitude and longitude are measured in degrees
- Distortion
- When something doesnt look the way it is suppose to; a misrepresentation of the true shape, used my cartographers when making flat maps
- Geography
- The study of the earths surface, the people, culture, and their relationships with each other
- Grid
- A system used to help locate places on a map, latitude and longitude create a grid.
- Longitude
- An imaginary line that runs vertically from pole to pole, they all intersect at the poles. These lines measure distance east or west from the prime meridian.
- Middle latitude
- The area north of the tropic of cancer but south of the arctic circle & the area south of the tropic of Capricorn but north of the Antarctic circle. This is the region we live .. known as the temperate zones, they receive some direct sunlight & some i
- Parallel
- The same as a latitude line
- Prime Meridian
- A longitude line, measured at 0º, it is the reference point for all other longitude lines
- Tropic of Capricorn
- 23.5ºS a latitude line that is near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil … this line receives direct sunlight on the Winter solstice (in the Northern hemisphere)
- Projection
- A representation of the round earth on a flat map
- Scale
- The size of an area on a map (usually shrunk in proportion) as compared to the actual size
