- Sentence
- A word group that contains a subject and a verb and that expresses a complete thought.
- Sentence Fragment
- A word group that looks like a sentence but either does not contain both a subject and a verb or does not express a complete thought.
- Independent Clause
- A word group that has a subject and a verb and that expresses a complete though.
- Subordinate Clause
- A word group that has a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought.
- Paragraph
- A group of related sentences.
- Main Idea
- Is the main point, or central message, of the paragraph.
- Topic Sentence
- Sentence with the main idea in it. It is often the first or second sentence of a paragraph. Sometimes it comesin the middle or at the end.
- Coherence
- Occurs when the details in a paragraph are arranged and connected in a way that makes sense to the reader.
- Spatial Order
- Presents details according to their location.
- Chronological Order
- Presents details in the order which they happen.
- Order of Importance
- Araanging details for most important to least important or from least important to most important.
- Logical Order
- You arrange ideas into groups.
- Unity
- When all of its sentences work together to support the main idea.
- Elaborates
- To explain or illustrate.
- Subject
- Tells whom or what the sentence is about.
- Complete Subject
- consistes of all the words needed to tell whom or what the sentence is about.
- Simple Subject
- Is the main word or word group that tells whom or what the sentence is about.
- Predicate
- Tells something about the subject.
- Simple Predicate or verb
- Is the main word or word group in the complete predicate.
- Compound Subject
- Consists of two or more subjects that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same verb.
- Compound Verb
- Consists of two or more verbs that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same subject.

- Is a true story about a specific event in a writer's life.
- Expressive Writing
- Writers share, or express, their thoughts and feelings, an autobiographical incident
- Generalization
- Is a statement that applies to many individuals or experiences, not just a specific person or experience.

- Alliteration
- Is describing something that is not human, such as an animal or object, as if it were human by giving it human qualities.
- Simile
- compares two different things using the word (like or as)
- Metaphor
- Compares two different things by saying one is the other.
- Narrative Paragraph
- Paragraph to tell a story or recount an event.
- Descriptive Paragraph
- Paragraph used to describe a person, animal, scene, or object.
- Expository Paragraph
- Paragraph used to provide information, including facts, instructions, and definitions.
- Persuasive Paragraph
- Paragraph that expresses an opinion about an issue.
- Action Details
- Tells what events occurred and what people said.
- Sensory Details
- Describes what you see, hear, taste, feel, and smell.
- Declarative Sentence
- Sentence that makes a statement and ends with a period.
- Imperative Sentence
- Sentence that gives a command or makes a request.
- Interrogative Sentence
- Sentence asks a question and ends with a question mark.
- Exclamatory Sentence
- Sentence shows excitement or expresses strong feeling and ends with an exclamation point.
- Common Noun
- Names any one of a group of persons, places, things, and ideas.
- Proper Noun
- Names a particular person, place, thing, or idea. It begins with a capital letter.
- Noun
- A word that names a person, place, thing or idea.
- Compound Noun
- Is a single noun made up of two or more words used together.
- Pronoun
- Is a word that is used in place or one or more nouns or pronouns.
- Antecedent
- The word or word group that a pronoun stands for.
- Possessive Pronoun
- Are personal pronouns that are used to show ownership or possession.
- Demonstrative Pronoun
- When the words this, that these, those, are used alone.
- Indefinite Pronoun
- Pronoun that refers to a person, place, a thing, or an idea that may or may not be specifically named.
- Interrogative Pronoun
- Pronoun that introduces a question.
- Relative Pronoun
- Pronoun that introduces a subordinate clause.
- Adjective
- Is a word that is used to modify a noun or a pronoun.
- Proper Adjective
- Is formed from a proper noun and begins with a capital letter.
- Demonstrative Adjective
- When the words this, that, these, those, modify a noun.
- Verb
- Word that expresses action or a state of being.
- Verb Phrase
- The main verb and its helping verb or verbs.
- Prediction
- Is a guess you make about what will happen next.
- Action Verb
- Verb that expresses either physical or mental activity.
- Linking Verb
- Connects, or links, the subject to a word or word group that identifies or describes the subject.
- Transitive Verb
- Is a verb that expresses an action directed toward a person, place, thing, or idea.
- Objects
- Words that receive the action of a transitive verb.
- Intransitive Verb
- Verbs that tell something about the subject or expresses action without the action passing to a receiver, or object.
- Complement
- Is a word or word group that completes the meaning of a verb.
- Direct Object
- Is a noun, pronoun, or word group that tells who or what receives the action of the verb.
- Indirect Object
- Is a noun, pronoun, or word group that usually comes between the verb and the direct object. It tells Whom or to what or for whom or for what.
- Subject Complement
- Is a word or word group that is in the predicate and that identifies or describes the subject.
- Predicate Nominatives
- Is a word or word group that is in the predicate and that identifies the subject or refers to is.
- Predicate Adjective
- Is a adjective that is in the predicate and that describes the subject.
