- Numeric Data
- Represents quantities used in arithmetic operations
- Support File
- program instruction that are executed in conjunction with the main exe file for a program
- Program File
- The main exe. file for a computer program
- Integrated Circuits
- A super thin slice of semi-conducting material
- Pipelining Processing
- processes multiple things at the same time
- Clusters
- a group of sectors that speeds up storage and retrieval
- Defragmentation
- utility that rearranges files to be stored in contiguous clusters
- Configuration File
- info about a program the computer uses toallocate the resources necessary to run it
- Character data
- Letters, symbols, and numbers not used in arithmetic operations
- Program Data Files
- contains data that is necessary for a task but isn't created by user ex-help file
- Dual Core Processing
- like having two processors
- Virtual Memory
- Stores parts of programs and data until they are needed by the processor
- Serial Processing
- slow, only processes one thing at a time
- Parallel Processing
- much faster processing
- Random Access Memory
- Temporary (volatile) holding area for data, application software and operating systems
- Temporary File
- contains data while file is open, but data is discarded when file is closed
- File Allocation Table
- keeps track of where all files are and which clusters are empty
- Read-Only Memory (ROM)
- Permanent on a chip from manufacturer; Holds computer start up routine, which is hard-wired to instructions
