Soviet Union
Joseph Stalin rose to power as the Communists leader of the Soviet Union. Demanded complete obedience from the people he ruled and used force to get it executed his rivals, ordered the deaths of thousands supporting rivals and sent million to Russian labor camps. TOTALITARIAN Reorganized the nation's, forcing million of people onto government-owned farms. 5 year plans, modernize, oil and steel for military force, expanding, collective farms anyone who speaks out about the government is taken away.........FEAR! 5 year plans: o goal to modernize Soviet industry and farming o collective farms (scythe on flag) o Soviet industry expands o oil and steel for modern military force DICTATORS: see opportunity to and do bad stuff, rest of the world does nothing.
Japan
During the Depression, many Japanese grew frustration with the government's failure to solve economic problems. This resulted in military leaders rising to power in the early 1930's. Leaders thought they would solve Japan's problems by expanding Japanese power in Asia. In September 1931, Japan launched an attack on Manchuria. League of Nations took no action, so Japan set up a government in Manchuria, renamed Manchukuo. Then Japan invaded northern China, moving south, until it occupied most of the country. 3 years later signed an alliance, known as the "Axis" with Germany and Italy. THE WORLD DOES NOTHING!
The rise of dictators
Hitler became the leader of Germany; he took advantage of people's anger and suffering. After the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, an economic depression hit and this added to the anger and frustration. Hitler and other leaders promised a better life. They described a glorious future to people humiliated by losing a war. Once they gained political power, these men became dictators-leader who controls their nation by force.
Italy
Benito Mussolini, the leader II Duce, rose to power by appealing to the frustration of the Italians who thought they didn't get enough out of the Treaty of Versailles and economic crisis. His party was gained enough strength to overthrow the King of Italy and outlaw all parties other than his controlled press, and banned criticism of gov't. in schools children were taught that "Mussolini is always right." 1935-attack and annex Ethiopia-aggression based on glory of ancient Rome. Purpose: distract Italians from economic fears. Ethiopian cavalry and rifles were no match fro Italian tanks and airplanes. Haile Selasissie-League of Nations lacked power; did nothing weak Britain and France 1) own economic problems 2) unwilling to risk another war. 1939-attack and annex Albania (neighbor)
American Neutrality/Foreign Policy
American wanted to remain neutral once again. To stay neutral Congress passed a series of Neutrality acts between 1935 and 1937 which banned the sale of weapons to nations at war. Laws also allowed trade only to nation that could pay cash for their good and transport their goods in their own ships Many debts left unpaid from Europe, want to prevent more Improving relations with Latin America-claimed no right to intervene with Latin America-I am going to become the good neighbor. we want to be on good terms with Latin American-don't want to give them any reason to stir up.
Germany on the March
Hitler began moving forward with plans for expansion. March 1936 ordered troops into Rhineland. Insisted that Germany should be unified with Austria, sent troops into there and annexed it (1938) Turned next to Sudetenland, and area of Czechoslovakia where many German people lived. Annexed Sudetenland Czechoslovakia prepared to fight, Britian and France afraid of war. Held Munich Conference, leaders agreed to turn Sudetenland over to Germany, Hitler promised not to expand Germany's territory any further. (1938) Hopes for peace!! Then they were shattered the following spring. March 1939 Hitler's army seized the rest of Czechoslovakia, now even Chamberlain realized that Hitler can't be trusted. (1939) Making plans to invade Poland. Worried that attack would anger Stalin, because Poland bordered the Soviet Union. Enemies signed a treaty called the Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact in August 1939. Pact freed Hitler to use force against Poland without fear of Soviet intervention Nazi-Soviet pact shocked the leaders of Europe.
Germany
The Great Depression hit Germany hard, million of people are unemployed and the economy teetered on the edge of collapse.government controlled press, religion, and schools The Germans rallied Adolf Hitler, gained popularity by using the people concerns about employment and inflation against them. He also played on the bitterness over the Treaty of Versailles. Became the chairman of Nazi Party or National Socialist German Worker's Party. Openly racist, Hitler and Nazi's took their anger out on the Jews, gypsies, and communists, disabled Anti-Semitism of the Jews would later lead to unspeakable horrors. Became chief minister, in 1933 and ended democracy and established a totalitarian rule. Totalitarian role is where a single party and its leader suppresses all opposition and control every aspect of people's lives. Germany neighbor's watched uneasily as he rebuilt Germany's military strength. Formed an alliance with Italy in 1936 powerful speaker and skillful leader. Neutrality Acts
1.) Banned sales or loans to any countries at war. 2) Warned Americans not to travel on ships of countries at war. Improving relations with Latin America 1) Roosevelt Corollary 1904 2) Rejected by Hoover in 1930: claimed no right to intervene affairs of Latin American countries.
