- What is technology?
-
Humankind's way of reaching out into the world by using
knowledge and creativity to expand human potential and modify the environment. - Construction
-
Using materials, work, processes and equipment to build
structures on site.
Examples: Houses, schools, office buildings, barns, stadiums, etc. - Production
- Changing raw materials into useful products.
- Transportation
- Moving people and goods from one location to another.
- Communication
- The sending and receiving of information.
- What are the four areas of technology
- Construction, production, transportation, and communication
- What is the dark side of technology?
-
Some by-products of technology
include pollution, crime, overuse of natural resources, and many more. - What are the four modes of transportation?
- Land, water, air, and space
- Land
- cars, trucks, buses, trains, etc.
- Water
- boats, jet skis, cruise ships, etc.
- Air
- airplanes, hot air balloons, gliders, helicopters, etc.
- Space
- rockets, satellites, space shuttle, etc.
- What are the transportation systems?
- Vehicles, guideways, signal devices, and stations/terminals
- Vehicles
- cars, planes, boats, etc.
- Guideways
- roads, rivers, train tracks, etc.
- Signal Devices
- stop lights, turn signals, bouys (in a river or lake), road signs, etc.
- Stations/Terminals
- train depots, ports, gas stations, airports, etc.
- What are the two types of communication?
- Graphic, Wave/Electronic
- Graphic
-
drawings, pictures, graphs, photographs, written words. This type of
communication does not disappear in delivery. - Wave/Electronic
-
Radio, television, telephone, computer systems. This type of
communication travels in waves. It disappears in transit, it travels through the air
or in electronic lines (wires, cables, fiber optics, etc.). - Communication systems
-
ways in which people use technology to
communicate. One must consider where the message originates and
who/what uses the information. - People to people
- Talking, television shows, radio broadcast, emails, etc.
- People to machine
- Computer programming, setting a thermostat, etc.
- Machine to people
- Gas gauge, thermostat, speedometer, clock, etc.
- Machine to machine
-
computer operated robots, thermostat tells furnace or air
conditioner to turn on, etc. - Communication process
- Encoding, transmitting, recieving, decoding, storage
- Encoding
-
Turning the message into a code, usually a language such as
English, sign language, Morse code, etc. - Transmitting
-
Sending the message, maybe through a phone, computer, radio,
printed materials, etc. - Recieving
-
If the message is not received, communication has not taken place.
Once the intended audience has the message, it has been received. - Decoding
-
Turning the message into useful information. Changing dots and
dashes into letters and words, in the case of Morse code. - Storage
-
a way to save the message for later use. Computer hard drive, file
cabinet, etc.
