- epithet
- a brief phrase that points out traits associated with a particular person or thing
- allusion
- a reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art
- ransom
- offering of money or other compensations for the return of something of value
- epic simile
- a long comparison that often continues for a number of lines
- heroic code
- unwritten rules by which Homeric heroes live with their lives
- aristos
- being the best in any situation; being of superior ability and supremacy (aristocracy) “Royalty†“Blue Bloodsâ€
- arête
- merit, respect of peers; spoils of war - symbol; goodness, excellence, virtue of any kind, developing your talents
- kleos
- desire for glory/fame. “killer being killed†attitude in battle. desire to become a subject of songs.
- implied meaning
- what alters common theme in Iliad + Odyssey. sons expected to build on father’s glory.
- aristeia
- the exploits that gain the warrior the prestige of having his comrades consider him meritorious (arête).
- anthropomorphism
- Homer’s view of the nature of the gods. He gives them human characteristics.
