- algebra
- a mathematical language that uses symbols, ususally letters, along with numbers. The letters stand for numbers that are unknown.
- algebraic expression
- A combination of variables, numbers, and at least one operation.
- base
- In a power, the number used as a factor. In 10(3), the base is 10. (10 x 10 x 10)
- clustering
- An estimation method in which a group of numbers close in value are rounded to the same number.
- compare
- <, >, or =
- compatible numbers
- Numbers that are easy to divide mentally.
- composite numbers
- A number greater than 1 with more than two factors.
- cubed
- The product in which a number is a factor three times. Two cubed is 8 because 2 x 2 x 2 = 8.
- equation
- A mathematical sentence that contains an equals sign (=).
- equivalent
- is equal to
- evaluate
- To find the value of an algebraic expression by replacing variables with numbers.
- exponent
- In a power, the number of times the base is used as a factor. In 5(3), the exponet is 3. That is, 5(3) = 5 x 5 x 5.
- factor
- A number that divides into a whole number with a remainder of zero.
- greatest common factor (GCF)
- The greatest of the common factors of two or more numbers. The GCF of 24 and 30 is 6.
- integer
- The whole numbers and their opposites . . . . -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 . . .
- inverse operation
- Operations which undo each other. For example, addition and subtraction are inverse operations.
- least common multiple (LCM)
- The least of the common multiples of two or more numbers. The LCM of 2 and 3 is 6.
