- AAMA
- American Association of Medical Assistants – Professional association for medical assistants that oversees program accreditation, graduate certification, and provides a forum for issues o concern to the physician.
- Accreditation
- Process in which an institution (school) voluntarily completes an extensive self-study after which an accrediting association visits the school to verify the self-study statements.
- AMA
- American Medical Association – Professional association for physicians which maintains directories of all qualified physicians, evaluates prescription and non-prescription drugs, advises congressional and state legislatures regarding proposed health care laws, and publishes a variety of scientific journals.
- Anesthesiologist
- An anesthesiologist is trained to administer both local and general drugs to induce a complete or partial loss of feeling (anesthesia) during a surgical procedure. Certified registered nurse anesthesiologists (CRNA) also may administer anesthetics.
- Autopsy
- An examination of organs and tissues in a deceased body to determine the cause of death.
- Cadaver
- A dead body; a corpse.
- Cardiovascular
- Cardiovascular surgery is the surgical treatment of the heart and blood vessels.
- CEUs
- Continuing Education Credits – Credit awarded for additional course work beyond certification in order to remain current in one’s field for recertification. Medical Assistants are required to get 6.0 CEUs every five years (60 hours. 1 hour = 0.1 points)
- Chemotherapy
- The use of chemicals, including drugs to treat or control infections and diseases.
- Confidentiality
- The ability to safeguard patient confidences, particularly information in the medical record regarding family history, past or current diseases or illnesses, test results, and medications.
- Dermatology
- A dermatologist treats injuries, growths, and infections relating to the skin, hair and nails. May treat patients either medically or surgically.
- Geriatric
- The practice of geriatrics is focused on the care of diseases and disorders of the elderly.
- Hematology
- The study of blood and blood-forming tissues.
- Homeopathy
- The treatment and prevention of disease based on the premise that large doses of drugs which cause symptoms in healthy people will cure the same symptoms when given in small doses.
- Microorganism
- Minute living organisms such as bacteria, virus, protozoa, and fungus that are not visible to the human eye without a microscope.
- Morbidity
- Morbidity rate refers to the number of sick persons or cases of a disease within a certain population.
- Mortality
- Mortality rate refers to the death rate; the ration of the number of deaths in a given population.
- Neurosurgery
- Neurosurgery involves surgical intervention for diseases and disorders of the central nervous system.
- Oncology
- The study of cancer and cancer related tumors.
- Ophthalmologist
- An ophthalmologist treats disorders of the eye. The study of ophthalmology includes the diagnosis and treatment of vision problems using both medical and surgical procedures.
- Orthopedist
- An orthopedist or orthopod specializes in the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention and correction of disorders of the musculoskeletal system. An orthopedic surgeon specializes in surgical procedures relating to this specialty.
- Pasteurization
- The process during which substances, such as milk and cheese, are heated to a certain temperature to eliminate bacteria.
- Pathology
- Study of the nature and cause of disease.
- Physiatry
- The branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease or injury, and the rehabilitation from resultant impairments and disabilities, using physical and sometimes pharmaceutical agents.
- Radiology
- A radiologist specializes in the study of tissue and organs that is based on x-ray visualization. The physician has been tested and approved by the American Board of Radiology.
- Triage
- Process of prioritizing patients based on medical need. When in a physician’s office, usually refers to scheduling patients over the phone.
