- bolting point
- temperature and pressure at which a liquid becomes a gas
- melting point
- temperature and pressure at which a solid becomes a liquid
- element
- a substance that cannot be separated or broken down by simpler substances or by chemical means.
- compound
- substance made of up of atoms or two or more difference elements joined by chemical bonds
- molecule
- a group of atoms that are held together by chemical forces - smallest unit of matter
- matter
- anything that has mass and takes up space
- mixture
- combination of substances that are not chemically combined
- pure substances
- matter that has fixed composition and definite properties
- heterogeneous
- mixtures which are clearly separate
- homogeneous
- mixtures that appear combined as a compound but are not
- physical properties
- those properties that can be tested like: state, color, luster, clarity, flexibility, malleability, ductility, odor, taste, m.p/b.p, density, etc.
- m.p/b.p
- freezing point/boiling point
- density
- physical part of matter, amount per space or D=M/V
- How do you calculate the volume of a substance if you know the density?
- take the density (mass per volume) and use as the conversion factor (x amount of mass equals one unit of volume) Invert the conversion factor (turn it upside down) and multiply times the given Mass Equals the volume
- How do you calculate the density of a substance if you know the volume?
- Take the mass and divide by the volume
- Chemical Properties
- flammability, oxidization, reactivity to acidity
- Physical changes
- changes to the state of the matter maybe the physical properties but the Chemical substance does not change
- sublimation
- changing solid to gas or vice versa
- condensation
- changes from gas to liquid (opposite: evaporation)
- Chemical changes
- one or more substances are chemically altered
- indicates a chemical change has occurred
- 1 - gas or bubbles; 2 - heat or light; 3 - a precipitant was produced; 4 - color might change; 5 - reversible - substances can't go back
- solubility
- degree something can dissolve
- miscibility
- mixability
- ionic bond
- electron is transferred from one atom to another
