- What are the kinds of Science?
- Pure Science, and Applied Science
-
-Science carried out to answer a question or gain knowledge
-Examples: biology, chemistry, physics, and geology - PURE SCIENCE
-
-Science that takes the knowledge learned in pure science and uses it to solve real world problems.
-Examples: Environmental Science and medicine (doctor) - APPLIED SCIENCE
- Common steps that biologists and other scientists use to gather information and answer questions
- SCIENTIFIC METHOD
- What are the steps in the scientific method?
-
1.)Observing
2.)Problem
3.)Hypothesis
4.)Experiment-Analyze data
5.)Conclusion -
-A close look at a situation (including its causes and effects.)
-Must use all senses, not only sight. - Observing
-
-Coming up with an explanation for the observations that is testable
-A hypothesis is not a random guess, but an educated one. It is what the scientist expects to happen. - Hypothesizing
-
-Perform a procedure that tests a hypothesis under controlled conditions
-Controlled Experiment
-An experiment with two groups: the control group and the experimental group - Experimenting
- the group in which all the conditions are kept the same
- Control Group
- The test group in which all the conditions are kept the same, except for the single condition that is being tested.
- Experimental Group
- The conditions that can affect an experiment
- Variables
- The condition in the experiment that is changed, it affects the experiment outcome.
- Independent Variable
- A second condition that is not changed, but the scientist observes and measures this condition to see if it has changed after changing the independent variable.
- Dependent Variable
-
-Information obtained from experiments
-Can be numerical (distance) or verbal (activites) - Data
-
-Making statements about the hypothesis based upon the experimentation
-Defines whether the hypothesis is true or not - Conclusion
-
-Report the results in scietific journals
-Other scientist can now try to verify the results by repeating the experiment - After the Conclusion
- What is one kind of research?
- Descriptive Research
-
-Research that results in observational data such as written descriptions
-Example:How a particular wild animal reacts to events in its environment - Descriptive Research
