- What are the Mission Capabilities?
- Offensive and Defensive
- Offensive Strikes
- Strikes against ships, air bases, and missle sites. Usually falls under the Strike Warfare Commander.
- Defensive Strikes
- The use of interceptors, surface to air missles, and air-to-air missles, electronis countermeasures, dispersion, and mobility to protect of defend against an offensive threat.
- What are the four parts of Defensive Strikes?
-
-Surveillance, Detection and Engagement.
-Airborne Early Warning Aircraft(AEW) - Surveillance, Detection, and Engagement
- Identifying an unknown contact and getting a firing solution before it reaches weapons release range.
- Airborne Early Warning Aircraft
- Timely warning of inbound airborn threats by AEW aircraft. They use Aircraft Tactical Data System to connect with Naval Tactical Data System to relay target info.
- Picket Units
- Units stationed at the Air Cooridor to delouse friendly aircraft of shadowing aircraft. Remove enemies that are tailing friendlies.
- Combat Air Patrol(CAP)/Defensive Counter Air(DCA)
- Fighter aircraft working with AEW aircraft as the first line of defense against incoming enemies. Fly in "racetrack" pattern to conserve fuel so they can intercept enemies hundreds of miles away from carrier.
- Air Warfare Commander
- Senior captain of an AEGIS crusier or destroyer in the battle group. In control of all air defense fighters.
- Defense Areas
-
-Surveillance Area
-Classification, Identification, and Engagement Area
-Engagement Zones
-Vital Area - Surveillance Area
- Area that extends from teh High Value Unit(HUV)to the maximum detection range of the battle group.
- Classification, Identification, and Engagement Area(CIEA)
- Region of coverate in which surface, air, and subsurface contacts may be classified, identified and engaged by force weapons.
- Engagement Zones
-
Coverage in which weapons may be employed against an air threat.
-Fighter Engagement Zone
-Missile Engagement Zone
-Joint Engagement Zone - Vital Area
- Area that contains High Value Units. Area extends to the maximum range of the weapons of incoming enemies.

- The Navy and Marine Corp combat tested Strike fighter. Very versitile and can escort itself to a target, drop ordinance, and escort itself back.
- F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet
- Sent to replace the A-6E Intruder in the intrum period before the arrival of the Joint Strike Fighter. Greater range, speed, ceiling, payload, and improved electronics over the C/D models.
- F-14 Tomcat
- Fleet defense fighter for a carrier battle group. Capable of carrying the Phoenix air to air missle and can track 24 targets at ranges up to 100 miles.
- E-2C Hawkeye
- The Navy's carrier based early warning and detection aircraft. Carries the APS-125 radar that has a range of 275 NM and can track 250 targes and guide 60 interceptors.
- SH-60 Sea Hawk
- Used for under-sea warfare, search and rescue, drug interdiction, anti-ship warfare, cargo lift, and special ops. Carries the AGM-119B Penguin.
- S-3B Viking
- The Navy's sea-control platform. Carries the AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missle and can act as an aerial refueling tanker.
