- Compressed File
- Data encoded so it taked up less storage space.
- Spiders
- Another name for search engines.
- Home Page
- The main or primary page for a web site which will include links to other pages in the web site.
- Online
- The process of performing certain tasks, such as searching the Web or responding to email, while actually logged onto the Internet.
- Hypertext or Hypermedia
- A portion of a text document that contains programming code to link a word, graphic, or phrase to another section in a document or to a different document.
- ISP
- Private or public organizations that offer access to the Internet.
- Text String
- Words or phrases used to narrow a search area.
- Baud Rate
- A data transmission rate (bits/second) for modems.
- Offline
- The process of performing certain tasks, such as preparing e-mail messages.
- Internet Protocol
- The method of communication that allows information to be exchanged across the Internet and across varying platforms that may be accessing or sending information.
- Information Superhighway
- Nickname for the Internet: a vast highway by which countless pieces of information are made available and exchanges back and forth among its many users.
- Login
- A process by which you gain access to a computer by giving it your username and password.
- TCP/IP
- The communication system that is used between networks on the Internet.
- Downloading
- Transferring data (files) from a remote computer to a location on the user's local computer.
- Multimedia
- The process of using various computer formats: pictures, text, sound, movies, etc.
- Operators
- Words or symbols that modify the search string instead of being part of it.
- Crawlers
- Another name for search engines.
- Gopher
- A menu system that allows you to search various sources available on the Internet.
- Chat
- A live "talk" session with other Internet or network users in which a conversation is exchanged back and forth.
- Complex Search
- Uses two or more words in a text string to search for matches in a search engine's catalog.
- Newsgroup
- A bulletin board of news information. Users specify which news topic they are interseted in, and subscribe to receive information on the topic.
- Links
- Hypertext or hypermedia objects that, once selected, will connect you to related documents or other areas of interest.
- Uploading
- To copy a file or information from your computer to another computer or server.
- Surfing
- Exploring various World Wide Web sites and links to search for information on the Internet.
- Search Engine
- A software program that goes out on the web, seeks web sites, and catalogs them (usually by downloading their home pages.)
- Search Sites
- Web sites that contain catalogs of web resources that can be searched by headings, URLs, and key words.
- Bookmark
- A browser feature that memorizes and stores the path to a certain web site.
- Directories
- Also referred to as folders; they are used for organizing and storing computer files.
- Start Page
- The opening page within a browser application.
- Online Services
- Organizations that usually offer Internet access, (for a monthly fee) as well as other services, such as shareware, techincal support, group discussions, and more.
- Modem
- A piece of equipment (either internal or external) that allows a computer to connect to a phone line for the purpose of dialing into the Internet, another network, or an individual computer.
