- Ecology-
- The scientific study of the interactions among organsms and between organisms and their environments.
- biotic factor-
- The prokaryotes, protists, animals, fung, and plants in the environment.
- abiotic factor-
- The nonliving physical and chemical conditions.
- population-
- A group of individual organisms of the same species living in a particular area.
- Community-
- All of the oranisms inhabiting a particular area.
- ecosystem-
- Community of living things plus the nonliving features of the environment that support them.
- Biosphere-
- All parts of the planet that are inhabited by living things.
- Habitat
- Specific envirnonments in which organisms live.
- Tropics-
- The warmest temperature zone. (lies between 23.5 N latitude and 23.5 S latitude)
- Polar zones-
- The region north of the Arctic Circle (66.5 N) and the region south of the Antarctic Circle (65.5 S) receive the least amount of direct sunlight a year round (coldest).
- Temperature zones-
- The latitudes in between the tropics and polar zones in each hemishpere.
- Current-
- A river-like flow pattern within a body water.
- Microclimate-
- The climate in a specific area that varies from the surrounding climate region.
- Biomes-
- Major types of terrestrial ecosystems that cover large regions of the Earth.
- tropical rain forest-
- Type of forest near the equator that receives as much as 250 cm of rainfall yearly.
