- Personality
- a characteristic of how a person behaves, thinks, and feels
- Personality measures
- Inventories- self reported measures usually on a scale. projective test- subjective. interpreted by patient then interpreted by researcher. rorschach inkblot test TAT- themati apt perception test. people generate stories.
- Traits
- -relatively stable characteristics of a person-across a wide range of situations. -assed using inventories -failure to explain why
- Sensation seeking
- The tendency for a person to seek out new and exciting situations. -vocations, the type of job they choose. sports, driving
- Type A Type B
- Competitive, high achieving, time pressured, impatient. higher risk of coronary heart disease. Type B: relatively more relaxed, easy going.
- The BIG FIVE
- Conscientiousness- self disciplined, hard workers. better work performance. Agreeableness-friendly Neuroticism-anxious Openness to experience- imaginative and trying new things Extraversion- talking outgoing, wanting to be around people. look people in the eye.
- Extravert/introvert
- differences in cortical arousal. extraverts pursue stimulation b/c/ they are not easily aroused. retiuclar formation is not easily stimulated introverts are easily stimulated.
- Psychodynamic Approach
- -formed by needs, strivings, and desires. -dynamic unconsious: active system compsed of hidden forces, deep instincts and desires and person's struggle to control them. id, ego and superego control our personality
- Social-Cognitive Approach
- How individuals percieve their environments and respond to them. The way we perceive our environment influences the way we deal with it. -locus of control and self esteem
- Locus of Control
- -persons tendency to beleive that the causes of behavior are internal (under his control) or external (out of his control) People with ext. LOC do not hold themselves accountable for what happens to them.
- Self-Esteem
- Extent to which individual feels pos/neg toward the self. -pos. feedback increases self-esteem
