- BEAT
- The steady pulse of the music
- RHYTHEM
- The long and short arrangement of notes on or arround the beat.
- SIMPLE METER
- 2/4, 4/4, 3/4 -> grouped in two's
- COMPOUND METER
- 2 or more meters -> grouped in threes JJJ JJJ
- DOWNBEAT
- 1st beat in a measure
- UPBEAT
- last beat in a measure
- ANACUSIS
- The pick-up note. Start on any beat in a measure before the first full emasure
- CHORD
- At least 3 notes
- TRIAD
- Three tones/notes
- TONAL CENTER
- The tonic, where the peice resolves to. Ex: G is the tonal center of GMaj
- ATONALITY
- Lacking a tonal center
- HARMONY
- Addition to the melody. Ex: Accompanament
- SCALE
- (Ladder) A specific succesion of notes in patterns of whole and half steps.
- INTERVAL
- distance between two pitched. Dependent upon -size and quality
- SHARP
- raises a note 1 half step
- FLAT
- lowers a note one half step
- PHRASE
- A musical sentence. Can end in a period or a question.
- TIMBRE
- A character or quality/sound that is made by a specific insturment
- MOTIVE
- Like a fragment of a sentence
