Ch. 1 Scientific Inquiry
Every science student should know and be able to use these words!
Terms
undefined, object
copy deck
- Generalization
- general conclusion
- Analysis
- a detailed examination of a subject
- Evidence
- collected body of data from observations and experiments
- Earth & Space
- study of earth and its place in the universe
- Quantitative Data
- numerical measurements or notes
- Observation
- use of the senses to gather and record information
- Hypothesis
- a suggested, testable answer to a well-defined scientific question; shows the cause and effect
- Independent Variable
- variables that are deliberately manipulated to invoke a change in the dependent variables (Cause)
- SKILLS OF A SCIENTIST
- OBSERVING, INFERRING, PREDICTING, CLASSIFYING, AND MODELING
- 3 Branches of Science
- Earth, Physical, Life
- inquiry
- THE WAY A SCIENTIST STUDIES THE WORLD AND PROPOSES EXPLANATIONS BASED ON THE DATA THEY GATHER
- Inference
- logical conclusion based on observations
- Control
- nothing is done to it, used only to show comparison
- Problem Statement
- a testable statement in which the problem is stated and later answered
- Dependent Variable
- variables that are observed to change in response to the independent variables (Effect)
- EXPERIMENT
- A SERIES OF CAREFULLY PLANNED STEPS THAT TESTS A HYPOTHESIS. IT MUST BE CONTROLLED TO BE "VALID" OR "FAIR".
- Scientific Theory
- well-tested explanation that makes sense
- Physical Science
- study of energy, motion, sound, light, chemistry, electricity & magnetism
- Data
- recorded observations or items of information
- Conclusion
- the result or outcome of an experiment or process
- Qualitative Data
- tells how it looks, basic information (subject has blue eyes, etc.)
- Model
- physical, mental, or mathematical representation of how people understand; a process or an idea
- Prediction
- a statement about what will happen in an experiment before it is completed
- Life Science
- study of all living things and how they interact
- Scienctific Law
- an observed pattern in nature, scientists expect it to happen every time.
- Controlled Experiment
- experiment that tests the effect of a one variable at a time
