- Personification
- Figure of speech in which an aspect of nature, an inanimate object, or an abstract idea is treated as if it possessed human qualities.
- Poem
- Literary form that emphasizes rhythm and figurative language, doesn't have to rhyme.
- Rhetoric
- Art of persuasion through speaking and writing.
- Romanticism
- Literary movement in 19th century. Imaginatin, intuition, emotions, and the individual are the focus. Man is inherently good.
- Satire
- Literary genre that uses irony, wit, and sometimes sarcasm to expose humanity's vices and flaws. ex.: A Modest Proposal
- Simile
- Figure of speech that is a DIRECT comparison of two different objects, ideas, or actions. Uses "like" or "as."
- Symbol
- Representation of something; a word or phrase that functions on two levels. On the surface it literally means a concrete image. Below the surface, it represents an abstract idea, emotion, or thing.
- Synecdoche
- Figure of speech in which a part of something is used to represent the whole or, occasionally, the whole is used to represent a part. ex.: to use "sail" to refer to a boat
- Syntax
- Arrangement of words within a sentence.
- Theme
- Main idea, expressed or implied, in a work of literature.
- Tone
- Atmosphere or mood of a work. Determined by the writer's attitude toward the subject and created by setting and language.
