What are the 6 laboratory operating procedures each student is responsible for doing?
1) arrive on time
2) read all exercises adn appendices before lab
3) care properly for microscope
4) keep all equipment in food working condition and stored properly

6) turn off water faucets and gas burners when not in use or when leaving bench area
What are the proper steps for microscope care?
-put 4x objective over stage hole
-center specimen clamps over stage
-clean all lenses
-fold cord and place under condenser
-remove all traces of oil from objective housings and stage
-place cover on microscope
What waste is put in the 'Waste Paper Basket'?
-any used paper towels that are NOT contaminated
What waste is put in the 'Red Sharps Container'?
-small pieces of contaminated glass like slides
What waste is put in the 'Loafpands or Tri-pours'?

-used for contaminated swabs, tongue depressors, etc (NO screw cap or slip top tubes!)

What are the 5 proper culture-handling procedures students are responsible for?
1) wipe benchtops with disinfectant before and after
2) flame contaminated inoculating tools before putting on benchtop
3) use test tube racks, baskets, or other designated containers to carry/store cultures/media
4) never pipette by mouth, or put contaminated ones on bench. DISCARD into loaf pans or tri-pours (glass in sharps)
5) In case of accident remain calm and carry out proper procedures
What are are the proper procedures in the case of an accident or spill in lab?
-report accident to instructor immediately
-place paper towels over spilled material
-pour disinfectatnt liberally over towels
-wait 5 minutes and dispose of towels in lidded can with biohazard bag. If glass if involved, leave this to TA
-once towels are gone, pour disinfectant over area and wipe up again
-if you spill on yourself, pour disinfectant on area and tell instructor
What are rules 1-7 for laboratory safety?
1) never eat, smoke, drink, or chew gum in lab
2) Wear safety glasses if contacts must be worn
3) take off all jewelry
4) keep fingers, pencils, etc out of mouth
5) store personal belongings in microscope cabinet
6) place lab manual and papers on pull-out shelf
7) always wear closed, knee length, long sleeve, lab coat during class to prevent contamination of street clothes
What are rules 8-14 of laboratory safety rules and regulations?
8) tie long hair back
9) don't rush!
10) report spills, fires. or injuries immediateely. Gloves must be worn to protect skin breaks/lesions
11) know location of nearest fire extinguisher, firt aid kit, eye wash, phone, and shower
12) NEVEr remove media, slides or microbial cultures form lab
13) remove lab coat and wash hands EVERY time you leave lab
14) notify instructor of any health concerns
