- Agonist - Prime Mover
- Muscle whose contracton produces particular movement such as flexion of elbow Ex: Biceps brachi - flexion at elbow
- Antagonist
- Muscle whose actions opposes Agonist. Ex Biceps Brachi contracts - Anntagonist Triceps Brachi extends.
- Synergist
- When it contracts - assists Prime Mover in action. Ex: Prime Latissimus dorsi and teres major as synergist.
- Origin
- Immovable atachment, beginning point of a muscle
- Insertion point of a muscle
- Moveable attachment, end point of a muscle
- Sarcomere
- Smallest smallest functional unit of muscle. Z-line to Z-line is one sarcomere
- Sliding filament theory
- How Actin and Myosin interacts and how Sarcomere contracts
- Z-lines
- In middle of I-band. Thin filaments at either end of a sarcomere Proteins that make up the Z line extend toward M Line
- M-Line
- Thick filaments at the center of the Sarcomere
- A-Band
- Dark striations seen in muscle fiber. Area containing thick filaments & includes the "M" Line, e"H" band (thick filaments only) & the Zone of overlap.
- I-band
- Lighter strips seen in muscle fiber. Region between the A-band & the Z-line, which contains only thin filaments.
- H-Band
- Just Myosin. Region of A-band - thick filaments
- Muscle
- Made up of Fascicle
- Fascicle
- Made up of fibers - bundles of fibers in a muscle
- Fiber
- Muscular cell made up of myofibrils
- Myofibrils
- Made up of myofilaments, contains little sections called sarcomeres
- Myofilaments
- Made up of Actin (think filament) and Myosin (thick filament).
- How does muscle contract?
- All sacromeres contract simultaneously
- Myosin
- Thick filament - stays in place
- Functions of Skeletal Muscle
- 1. Produce Skeletal Movement 2. Maintains posture 3. Contributes to Temp. Regulation 4. Contrals entrance & exit of body
- What do muscles do?
- They contract - shorten. They must span a joint
- How long is a muscle fiber?
- As long as the muscle
- Muscle cell
- Very long cell - many nuclei.
- Epimysium -
- Covers whole muscle
- Perimysium
- Covers fiber
