- standing upright, with the arms at the sides of the body, the hands palm forward, the feet pointing forward parallel to one another
- anatomical position
- indicates a point lies nearer the front surface of the body
- anterior (OR ventral in humans)
- indicates a point lies nearer the rear of the body
- posterior (OR dorsal)
- indicates a point is nearest to the point of central attachment
- proximal (the elbow is proximal to the wrist)
- indicates a point is further from the point of central attachment
- distal (the wrist is distal to the elbow)
- indicates a point lies above another point in normal anatomical position
- superior (neck is superior to chest)
- indicates a point lies below another point in normal anatomical position
- inferior (chest is inferior to neck)
- describes a plane passing longitudinally through the body from anterior to posterior surface
- sagittal plane (the line which divides the body into two equal parts--left and right-- is called the mid-saggital plane)
- describes a plane passing laterally through the body at right angles to the sagittal plane
- coronal plane
- indicates a point is closer to the mid-saggital plane
- medial (eye is medial to the ear)
- indicates a point is further from the mid-saggital plane
- lateral (ear is lateral to the eye)
- a hole or opening in bone for the transmission of ligaments, blood vessels and nerves
- foramen (foramina)
- a pit, depression or concavity in or on a particular bone
- fossa (fossae)
- an open area within bone or formed by one or more bones
- cavity
- an elongated tube-like passageway
- meatus (OR canal)
- a general term describing any marked eminence on bone
- process
- a large process or eminence
- tuberosity
- a small process or eminence
- tubercle
- descriptive of a sharp, elongated or slender process
- spinous
- a rounded process
- condyle
- an opening to the surface or a space within a bone
- aperture
- a small articular swelling
- capitulum
- a prominent border or margin with a distinct linear elevation or ridge
- crista
- a narrow slit or depression in a bone
- fissure
- a shallow pit or depression on a bone
- fovea
- a slight ridge development on a bone
- linea
- used synonymously with "skull" and refers to the skeleton of the head, face and lower jaw
- cranium
- a skull lacking only the lower jaw
- calvarium
- a skull lacking the lower jaw and the facial region
- calvaria
- the brain case or skull cap alone
