- Sugar Act (1764)
- George Grenville put a tax on molasses. It was a lower tax than the former molasses tax, to try and avoid the smuggling of molasses. This was done w/o consent from the colonists and made them very upset.
- Townshend Acts
- George Grenville dared Charles Townshend to tax the Americans, and he did. He put a tax on paper, paint, lead, glass, and tea. The colonists protested again b/c the British didn't have the right to tax w/o their consent.
- Protesting the Stamp Act
- Colonists were angry, so they protested, using the famous phrase, "No taxation without representation!" They also tried to be peaceful and wrote a petition. The colonists also boycotted, and eventually, the British repealed the act.
- Stamp Act
- George Grenville put a tax on documents (marriage papers, diplomas, wills). All legal documents had to have a stamp showing that the tax had been paid. Britain had never asked America to pay such a tax. They also did it w/o asking the Colonists.
- Lexington and Concord
- Wing it!!!!
- Proclomation of 1763
- Colonists were fighting with Native Americans in Ohio River Valley. Britain made an imaginary line along the Apalachian mountains to protect the Native Americans. This made the Colonists mad because the British made this law w/o any say from the Colonists, AND even though they fought for the land, they were not allowed to go into it.
- Tea Act (1771)
- The townshend acts were repealed, but one act remained. The tea act. The tea act put a high tax on tea. Once again, w/o any consent from the colonists. This is what started the Boston Tea Party.
- Writs of Assistance
- b/c of the townshend acts, the British created a law that allowed officials to search a ship's cargo for smuggled goods.
- French and Indian War
- Britain and France were fighting over the Ohio River Valley. Started in 1754 and ended in 1760. Britain won, and France had to leave, but Spain got New Orleans.
- Intolerable acts (1774)
- The British passed 4 laws to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. The colonists called them the Intolerable Acts b/c they were so harsh. Shut down port of boston (this shut down trade). They wouldn't open the port until the colonists paid for the damages of the Boston Tea Party. The British also forbade Mass. town meetings w/o British gov. officials. They also allowed British officers and officials to have trials in Canada or Britain, where they would have a more than fair chance of NOT being prosecuted. Parliament also passed a new quartering act.
