An indeprendent flag flown by Americans who revolted over Mexican rulers in California. When the American General got to California, that flag was replaced by the American flag.
CEDE
To give up. (Cede from the Union means when the South wanted to be by themselves-led to the Civil War).
FORTY-NINER
Gold seekers who stampeded into California in 1849.
PROSPECTOR
Miners (usually of gold).
VIGILANTES
Committee members who drove out petty theives and hanged murders, but weren't cops.
BRIGHAM YOUNG
The leader of a group of people who walked from Iowa to Utah for religious freedom. The religion was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or the Mormons.
JOHN SUTTER
A Swiss immigrant who was a builder having a sawmill along the American River in California-Sutter's Mill.
BIDDY MASON
An African American nurse who invested her savings in real estate until she built a fortune. She donated money to an elementary school for African American children.
ISTHMUS OF PANAMA
The thin strip of land that joins North and South America.
