- An indeprendent flag flown by Americans who revolted over Mexican rulers in California. When the American General got to California, that flag was replaced by the American flag.
- CEDE
- To give up. (Cede from the Union means when the South wanted to be by themselves-led to the Civil War).
- FORTY-NINER
- Gold seekers who stampeded into California in 1849.
- PROSPECTOR
- Miners (usually of gold).
- VIGILANTES
- Committee members who drove out petty theives and hanged murders, but weren't cops.
- BRIGHAM YOUNG
- The leader of a group of people who walked from Iowa to Utah for religious freedom. The religion was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or the Mormons.

- A Swiss immigrant who was a builder having a sawmill along the American River in California-Sutter's Mill.

- An African American nurse who invested her savings in real estate until she built a fortune. She donated money to an elementary school for African American children.

- The thin strip of land that joins North and South America.
